Gulls #2

hey tommy,

i have been on here like 3 times now and almost responded and then erased my comment.

but... if i am going to be honest in my response of telling you how much i love the first gull shot i have to stay honest here and tell you i don't care for this one...

i feel like seeing it above the last shot either takes away from the strength of "Gull #1" or...

that "Gull #1" highlights the weakness of "Gull #2".

i know that sometimes we can over analyze the images we make or the images we see of others but i also think there is something to be said for editing (choosing to omit, not manipulate)...

one thing i have always struggled with in my own work is the creation of a series... if it is simple reportage it doesn't seem difficult to put together. if it is not, how does one create a series of images that carry a theme, or a message, with the images being able to meld with the others while also being able to stand on their own?

i have more thoughts on this but wonder what you think...

Hey Jeremy,

thank you for your post. and I actually couldn't agree more. the funny thing is that I had five free minutes before a conference call and though, "hey, I haven't posted a picture in a couple of days." So I when I was looking for something I saw another gull shot and just decided to throw it up there without much thought.

I do however agree with you that gull #1 is far superior to gull #2. in retrospect I probably should not have posted this shot after the first, but it wasn't thought out.

I would like to hear more on your thoughts of how you personally decide what pictures you put in a series...

Thanks again for your input and I appreciate the time you took to respond to the shot.

tommy,

the thing is i don't feel like i am that good at it. i am speaking specifically of images that are directly related to each other, images that were taken in perhaps the same session.

i do fine with putting images together that are directly unrelated because juxtaposition seems much more obvious to organize. but selecting images from a series of like images and making them all communicate a theme while at the same time making the individual image worth something on its own... man... that is hard.

one of my former photography students will frequently do series work... here is his blog:

http://dsmfpos22.blogspot.com/

i am not as crazy about his new series but go back to where he does the Calvin & Hobbes bit and have a good look at it. The thing that I like about it is that most of the images will stand on their own... I wouldn't mind having one or two of them framed and on my wall... but they also work very well as a series.

i think if it were not for that boat in the background of that Gull#2 in flight, you may have the start of a series... not that you were necessarily trying for one... cause the rest if that image has real strength, the way that angle juts out into the sea and the flightless gulls anchor it down...

hope you dont mind this... i think its good to have conversations on here every once in a while...

Jeremy,

I like to have conversations like this sometimes too. it helps us think more deeply about our photography and ways to portray an image or mood.

That guy's blog is really cool. I like how he does series and you are right, his Calvin and Hobbes series is brilliant!

Also: in addition too: I checked out your website, and this blog, and I really dig certain images there are too many to list, but I especially like the ones with simple colors, like : "mystic" as well as the ones were you deal with scale, such as the untitled one on your website that has the silhouette of the guy, and the city in the background (probably my favorite)and the one that im pretty sure is the San Fran Bridge and the one titled My dad and brother mark with them jumping. Anyways hope you dont mind me throwing in my two cents, just thought id let you know i like your stuff, specifically which ones.

Dsmfpos22,

Thanks man. I appreciate the feedback. Also, what i really like about your images is that you take alot of time to think through them before you take them. sometimes photography is capturing a moment and then other times it is actually making that moment and then making the picture. So anyways I appreciate the thought you put into your shots.
